Technology is the main driver of human progress. Digital transformation is revolutionizing countless sectors, dramatically changing the lifestyle of people around the world.  

Snap4City is an open source framework and a living lab, providing tools to quickly create a large range of smart city applications exploiting heterogeneous data coming from Helsinki, Antwerp, Florence, Tuscany) and enabling services for stakeholders by IOT/IOE, data analytics and big data technologies.  

Snap4City applications support multiple paradigms as data driven, stream and batch processing, thus allowing to create dashboards, IOT applications, Web and Mobile applications, Data Analytics, etc.

We have decided to launch this hackathon because we are constantly looking for innovative ways to live more responsibly and we think that a project on sustainability, sharing, collaboration, could concretely improve people's lives and help build the planet in which we would like to live.

Key points

The Snap4City Hack is a big online hackathon on the topics of Smart City. 

The hackathon is taking place from January 21 to March 15,  

All the projects will be hosted by Snap4City.org.  

All submissions must be uploaded on the Snap4City. In order to take part to the online hackathon, you have to register first on Snap4City and then sign up to the Hackathon by using the above link.

The great thing is that you can register and choose to run for Helsinki or Antwerp, using at least corresponding data.

DISIT

By choosing "DISIT" as "Organization" field when you register to Snap4City , you will access the data and services for wider testing.

Helsinki

By choosing "Helsinki" as "Organization" field when you register to Snap4City, you will access the data and services related to Helsinki and mandatory to run for Helsinki challenge.

Antwerp

By choosing "Antwerp" as "Organization" field when you register to Snap4City, you will access the data and services related to Antwerp and mandatory for Antwerp challenge.  

Themes of the Challenges

A smart city is an urban area that uses different types of electronic data collection sensors to supply information which is used to manage assets.  

The smart city concept integrates information and communication technology (ICT), and various physical devices connected to the network (the Internet of things or IoT) to optimize the efficiency of city operations and services and connect to citizens. The data collections are from citizens, devices, and assets that is processed and analysed to monitor and manage. Smart city technology allows city to interact directly with both community and city infrastructure and to monitor what is happening in the city and how the city is evolving.  

The topic challenges cover different areas: Ecological Watch, Social and Service Evolution, Stimulating Business Growth, City Aware. The challenge requires participants to test themselves by devising innovative solutions using snap4city tool.  


Ecological Watch 

  • Allow citizens and/or tourists to be aware about the environmental conditions and being timely informed (notified) of eventual warning cases.

Social and Service Evolution  

  • Allow citizens and/or tourists to be aware about social and services evolution.  

Stimulating Business Growth

  • Providing at business operators tools for managing and leveraging their business.  

City Aware

  • Providing to city operators tools for monitoring the city condition, and simulating/analysing city evolution in different cases.  

Who could participate

The hackathon is open to:
individuals, teams, companies (only small businesses)
collectively, as a group already formed during registration.

The challenge offers full freedom to choose the medium, coding language, technology and develop new tools for engaging people to improve the future of the cities in which we live. You are free to choose the problem or problems you wish to address.  

The most innovative solutions will be awarded and show that they have a positive impact on large segments of the population.

We are looking for creative persons/teams, but also people sensitive to environmental issues and eager to help improve our cities!

Technologies

HTML5, JavaScript, Node-RED, CSS, Web App, Android App, IOS App, R Studio, Tensor Flow. Exploiting Snap4City specific technologies such as: Dashboards, IOT Applications, Smart City API, Data Analytics, machine learning.  

In order to facilitate the work of the teams during the Hackathons, we provide access to Snap4City through which participants can perform their applications and upload their projects in the most simple way. Snap4City is an opensource living lab, providing a flexible method and solutions to quickly create a large range of smart city applications exploiting heterogeneous data, expert systems, and enabling services for stakeholders by IOT/IOE, data analytics and big data technologies.  

Snap4City applications support multiple paradigms as data driven, stream and batch processing.

You are required to register to the Snap4City before sign-up to the hackathon. 


Awards

The projects will have to be presented for challenges of Antwerp or Helsinki using at least the corresponding data and services. They will have to be presented in the Hackathon by the teams, will be evaluated by a jury based on the following evaluation criteria:  
  • Utility and Value of the Project;
  • Relevance to the proposed objectives;
  • Design / User Experience;
  • Creativity and Innovation of the Project;
  • Clarity and Completeness of the presentation of the Project;  

Three winning teams will be identified for Helsinki and Antwerp. The organization will cover the expenses of participation to the closing ceremony in Helsinki - for the Helsinki challenge - and for Antwerp - for the Antwerp challenge to a representative of the winning teams.

On March 15 the jury will communicate the finalists, while the final classification and thus the winners will be communicated on Antwerp and Helsinki, respectively, where the finalists will be requested to present their projects to the audience.  

The winning team for the fast rabbit submission, will be awarded a prize of 5,000 euros.

The final winning teams will be awarded a prize of 7,000 euros each, the seconds prize is 3,500 euros, the thirds is 1,500 euros. 


Timetable

Registration opens on January 21 Registration closes on March 8 

Fast rabbit winner announced on February 20, among them submitted until February 15.  At this assessment, products/projects that obtained encouraging results will be awarded with a First Step Package, which at least include: a Snap4All IOT Button, stickers, USB Snap4City, T-shirt of Snap4City, Pins, for each member of the team. 

Finalist of the final hackathons of Helsinki and Antwerp will be announced on March 15.  The precise dates for the presentation of the projects in Antwerp and Helsinki in which the winner will be announced will be communicated soon on this web page.

All submissions must be uploaded on the Snap4City platform. In order to take part to the hackathon, you have to register first on the platform and then sign up on the hackathon by following the above link.

The registration for the hackathon is open! The registration for each hackathon is completely free of charge. Subscribe and wait for the receipt of the confirmation by e-mail. We therefore advise you to keep an eye on your account during the fifteen days before the hackathon closes.  

Registration for the event(s) requires:

  • the acceptance of the Rules that you can view and download here
  • the and the acceptance and signature of the NDA, that have to be signed before accessing to the data of Helsinki and Antwerp, while for DISIT testing data you can access immediatly.
  • the registration to the Snap4city platform. 
  • the registration to the Hackathon via the above or below link that bring you on Eventbrite.
